PIZZA WITH THE WORKS EXCEPT ANCHOVIES – November 12 – National Pizza with the Works Except Anchovies Day

Serves 4

[ingredients title=”Ingredients”]

  • 1 loaf frozen bread dough, about 1 pound, thawed OR 1 can prepared pizza crust
  • Cooking spray
  • 1/3 pound Italian sausage, mild, or hot
  • ½ cup white onion, chopped
  • ½ cup green pepper, seeded and chopped
  • ½ cup red pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup mushrooms, sliced
  • ¾ cup pizza sauce
  • ⅓ pound Canadian bacon
  • ⅓ pound pepperoni
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese

[/ingredients]

[directions title=”Instructions”]

  1. If using the frozen bread dough preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.  Place the dough on a 12-16 inch pizza pan.   Spray the top of the dough with the cooking spray, so your fingers won’t stick, and gently pat the dough onto the ungreased pizza pan.  Using a fork, prick the dough to keep bubbles from forming.  Place in the oven for 10-12 minutes, until it starts to brown.
  2. If using the prepared pizza crust preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.  Place the dough on a 12-16 inch pizza pan.
  3. In a pan, over medium heat, add the sausage, onion, red and green pepper, and salt.  Cook for 5 minutes, then add the mushrooms.  Cook until the sausage is no longer pink, then drain off excess grease.  Spread the pizza sauce on to of the dough.  Spread half of the cheese on top of the sauce then add the sausage mixture, Canadian bacon, and pepperoni.  Top with remaining cheese.  Bake for 8-12 minutes, until the cheese is melted, and crust is browned.
